چکیده

The interpretability of a machine learning model is essential for gaining insight into model behaviour. While some machine learning models (e.g., decision trees) are transparent, the majority of models used today are still black-boxes. Recent work in machine learning aims to analyse these models by explaining the basis of their decisions. In this work, we extend one such technique, called local interpretable model-agnostic explanations, to music content analysis. We propose three versions of explanations: one version is based on temporal segmentation, and the other two are based on frequency and time-frequency segmentation. These explanations provide meaningful ways to understand the factors that influence the classification of specific input data. We apply our proposed methods to three singing voice detection systems: the first two are designed using decision tree and random forest classifiers, respectively; the third system is based on convolutional neural network. The explanations we generate provide insights into the model behaviour. We use these insights to demonstrate that despite achieving 71.4% classification accuracy, the decision tree model fails to generalise. We also demonstrate that the model-agnostic explanations for the neural network model agree in many cases with the model-dependent saliency maps. The experimental code and results are available online. 1

Programs as Black-Box Explanations

With increasing complexity of machine learning systems being used1, there is a crucial need for providing insights into what these models are doing. Model-agnostic approaches [18], such as Baehrens et al. [1] and Ribeiro et al. [17], have shown that insights into complex, black-box models do not have to come at a cost of accuracy, and that accurate local explanations can successfully be provide...

Model-Agnostic Interpretability of Machine Learning

Understanding why machine learning models behave the way they do empowers both system designers and end-users in many ways: in model selection, feature engineering, in order to trust and act upon the predictions, and in more intuitive user interfaces. Thus, interpretability has become a vital concern in machine learning, and work in the area of interpretable models has found renewed interest. I...

Nothing Else Matters: Model-Agnostic Explanations By Identifying Prediction Invariance

At the core of interpretable machine learning is the question of whether humans are able to make accurate predictions about a model’s behavior. Assumed in this question are three properties of the interpretable output: coverage, precision, and effort. Coverage refers to how often humans think they can predict the model’s behavior, precision to how accurate humans are in those predictions, and e...

Explanations of model predictions with live and breakDown packages

Complex models are commonly used in predictive modeling. In this paper we present R packages that can be used to explain predictions from complex black box models and attribute parts of these predictions to input features. We introduce two new approaches and corresponding packages for such attribution, namely live and breakDown. We also compare their results with existing implementations of sta...

Interpretable Active Learning

Active learning has long been a topic of study in machine learning. However, as increasingly complex and opaque models have become standard practice, the process of active learning, too, has become more opaque. There has been little investigation into interpreting what specific trends and patterns an active learning strategy may be exploring. This work expands on the Local Interpretable Model-a...
